Being a mother in the 21st century is harder than it's ever been.  We have so many things coming at us and at our children, that it would take Super Woman and 2 of her super friends to safeguard our families.  The worries and anxieties we face on a daily basis are innumerable.  It’s no wonder that anxiety is the most common mental illness in the U.S. affecting more than 40 million Americans, and twice as many women as men.  And I’m sure there is a joke or two here about WHY twice as many women vs men suffer from anxiety!  Can I get an AMEN cause I think we all know that we (women) make the world go round!


Guilt, anxiety, shame, fear, worry and stress…these are who we make our friends on a daily basis.  I wish I could write a cute but oh so informative article with the answers on how to distance yourself from these crazy sister friends.  However, what I’d like to do is raise a glass to you, my fellow sisters in the trenches of life!  We are coming up on Mother’s day weekend and it's a great opportunity for you to practice healthy boundaries (we therapists love this phrase, have you ever noticed?)  Put a boundary on these unhealthy friends we keep on our shoulders and in our ears.  Instead of having guilt and shame over, invite GRACE. Start with yourself and then spread it around to all of the women in your life, even the ones who don’t deserve it because that’s kind of the point of grace after all.  Substitute anxiety and stress for time alone to breath.  And by breath, I mean actually breathing, in and out, controlled by you and not your emotions.   Worry is a major Debbie Downer, so invite GRATITUDE! Replace the list of things to do with a list of gratitude.  Maybe trade out your night time list of all the things you need to get done or that you didn’t do well enough and instead create a list or a notebook with no less than three things you are grateful for today.


Ladies, let's invite some new “friends” over and celebrate the women in our life, celebrate our lives and what we accomplish and how we love and care and nurture and make the world go round! Happy Mother’s Day friends!
